Late last week, Kotaku ran a rumor that said Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Technical Officer Izumi Kawanishi had been shuffled out of SCEI and is now working for Sony Corporate. Kotaku contacted Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America and Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe. All refused to comment. Odd, because this seems something that could be addressed rather easily if Kawanishi was still at the company.
Already scheduled for release in Japan later this month, the new model comes with an integrated power supply and is lighter due to revised internal architecture. According to an insider, Sony Computer Entertainment platform development head Izumi Kawanishi has been shuffled out of the division. Before we start, a bit about Kawanishi: He was key in the hardware development for the PS2, the PSP and the PS3, and he was the head of SCEI's Network System Development Section and R&D Division.
Expect a new PS2 model to hit the US in 2008. Expect it to cost $99, and expect it to sell like hotcakes. That's the news coming out of British trade site MCV, who are also saying the new "compact" model will, unlike the slim PSTwo, be internally-powered, allowing Sony to cut manufacturing costs and thus save a bit of cash.
@Just_Ben,
I can't figure out where else the loss would be coming from. They are making money on the PS2, they're making money on the PSP, so its got to be the PS3 thats losing them money.
I know they lost a ton of money on Lair and likely on Heavenly sword as well. Also keep in mind that the loss on the PS3 is for every unit MADE not every unit SOLD. They launched a couple new SKUs last quarter so thats a ton of new PS3s being made.
