Activision-Vivendi injunction tossed

Gamespot - July 2, 2008

Submitted by afsplat (126) at 5:01PM PST on July 2, 2008

When Activision and Vivendi Games announced in December that they would be merging their businesses in a transaction valued at $18.9 billion, it appeared as if the $27.50 per-share buyout offer--a then-32 percent premium over market price--was a pretty good deal. However, not all Activision shareholders were willing to so readily embrace the deal that would see World of Warcraft rubbing elbows with Guitar Hero at company socials.

Kotaku - July 1, 2008

Submitted by afsplat (126) at 7:55AM PST on July 1, 2008

Here comes a new challenger! Ack. Sorry. Couldn't resist. But then neither could Britons, as regardless of its agonisingly late release, Super Smash Bros. kicks off its stay in the charts at #1. Battlefield Bad Company also enjoys a surprisingly strong debut, entering the charts at #2 (and #7), while going the other way - and going the other way fast - is Metal Gear Solid 4, which drops from 1st to 5th, beaten out by such titles as the two above and...Big Beach Sports.

DFC predicts $57 billion gaming market in 2009, Wii to drive

Joystiq - June 30, 2008

Submitted by afsplat (126) at 10:56AM PST on June 30, 2008

The soothsayers at analyst group DFC Intelligence have revised their already rosy outlook for the game industry in 2009, predicting that the market, including consoles, PC and online games, could now reach a mind-blowing $57 billion by next year. DFC foresees that much of this growth will be driven by (surprise!) the Wii, a platform DFC's David Cole feels "has the chance to be one of the best selling systems of all-time."
