Circuit City files for bankruptcy protection

Circuit City Stores Inc., the nation's second-biggest electronics retailer, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday but plans to stay open for business as the busy holiday shopping season approaches.

Global Market Report: Japan Falls, UK Soars

The Top Global Markets Report - which aggregates data from the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track as well as Enterbrain - reveals that the UK videogame market rose 15 percent over the same period last year. For the same July-September period, the US held a steady 8 percent growth over last year’s results while Japan saw its market tumble 21 percent.

The price of videogames needs to be reduced if the industry is to welcome in new audiences in a bid to become a genuinely mass market entertainment medium, according to Sega A&R's head of content Darren Williams. He went on to point out that Xbox 360 and PS3 games are still seen as "luxury items" because of their GBP 30-45 price tags, which - despite any arguments over long term value for money - is still significantly more than DVD or even Blu-ray.

Nearly a quarter million people shopped online for a Wii last month. The three leading consoles and their related games made up 6 of the top 10 as well as half of the top 20.

Activision Blizzard loses $108m in Q209

"Publishing powerhouse Activision Blizzard (or "A.B. Atta' Boy" to its friends) has released its fiscal quarter results for the three-month period ending September 30. Overall, the company incurred a $108 million net loss, with a bulk of that (at least $188 million) from costs related to the merger with Vivendi Games. Top games for the quarter were Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, GH: On Tour and money-gusher World of Warcraft."

UK sales of games will outstrip music and video for the first time in 2008, says a report from Verdict Research.A huge shift in consumer attitudes has turned video games into the UK's most popular form of entertainment, say the retail analysts. It predicts spending on games will rise by 42% to £4.64bn in 2008, with sales on music and video at £4.46bn.
