Activision Blizzard loses $108m in Q209

"Publishing powerhouse Activision Blizzard (or "A.B. Atta' Boy" to its friends) has released its fiscal quarter results for the three-month period ending September 30. Overall, the company incurred a $108 million net loss, with a bulk of that (at least $188 million) from costs related to the merger with Vivendi Games. Top games for the quarter were Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, GH: On Tour and money-gusher World of Warcraft."

BBC: Games 'to outsell' music, video

UK sales of games will outstrip music and video for the first time in 2008, says a report from Verdict Research.A huge shift in consumer attitudes has turned video games into the UK's most popular form of entertainment, say the retail analysts. It predicts spending on games will rise by 42% to £4.64bn in 2008, with sales on music and video at £4.46bn.

Metacritic to tighten user votes system

Aggregate site Metacritic has said that it intends to tighten its user voting system after a series of high profile games received poor scores before they were even released to stores. Platform exclusive titles LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 have all suffered at the hands of users intent on disrupting legitimate scores – prompting Metacritic to disallow titles to be voted for before public release.

Poland-based CD Projekt's development debut, the PC RPG The Witcher, sold 1 million copies worldwide in the 12 months since release. Development cost is $11 million. It's success is achieved by making a game for a certain kind of gamer instead of trying to be everything to everyone. While other spends millions of dollars on marketing , the importance of word of mouth sometimes is lost on game companies.

Pre-owned market is "defrauding the industry"

Frontier founder and creator of Elite, David Braben, has said that he thinks HMV's move into selling pre-owned games is "shocking", and that the increasing emphasis on the pre-owned market is a serious threat to the games industry.

For the first time in a month, Wii Fit has been knocked off the top spot of the Australian game charts, with the honours going to the Xbox 360 exclusive--Fable II. The last game to knock Wii Fit down was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which only held the champion place for one week.
