When dozens of games are released each month across no fewer than six console and handheld platforms, there simply aren't enough data points to see how games are selling on each platform. However, in coordination with the NPD Group, Gamasutra has exclusive data on the top 5 titles for each of the current-generation consoles.

UK Charts: Force Unleashed on top

Individual formats chart for week ending 20 September: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed dominates, with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions taking the top two spots. The Wii version is in sixth behind Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Warhammer Online. Last week's number one, Spore, drops to 8th. Chart Track also reveals that 48% of Force Unleashed sales were on the 360, 30% on PS3 and 15% on Wii. See link for full chart.

The best way to fight piracy is to compete with it by offering greater value, according to Michal Kicinski, CEO of CD Projekt, but publisher's are too afraid to release titles without DRM.

Star Wars: Tops 1m Units in Five Days across all platforms

Vgchartz preliminary data shows that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has debuted to sales of over 1m units worldwide since its release on September 16. The strong debut comes despite mixed reviews. The plurality of sales in the Americas was on the Xbox 360, while sales in “Others” were more evenly distributed between the platforms, and smaller overall than Americas sales.

I hate to generalize, but as mentioned earlier, the Japanese generally enjoy games such as Final Fantasy, whereas Americans are generally into Madden, Halo, and the myriad FPS games that are available. Games from the multinational Japanese companies like Nintendo and Square seem to attract gamers in all territories, without exception. On the other hand, the Japanese are more resistant to the Western games such as Gears of War and Halo.

CryEngine 3 readied for PS4, 720

Speaking at GC Asia, Crytek’s Cevat Yerli has confirmed that the next generation of CryEngine will be release on the next round of console hardware. The Studio boss said he expects the next tech round in either 2011 or 2012, and that 360’s successor will arrive a year before the next PlayStation. Having estimated the console cycle, Crytek must now consider the technology inside the next boxes.
