US Market Share 2008 : Nintendo went up from 37% (6.7 B) to 47% (10.0 B), while Sony went down from 35% (6.2B) to 30% (6.4 B) and Microsoft went from 28% (5.1B) to 23% (5.0B).

Console : 1.9 million. Wii 44.1 %, XBOX 25.5, PlayStation 3 21.7. Portable : 1.2 million. Nintendo DS took 76.5 %, with Sony PSP accounting for the rest.

Research: Gamers Love the Challenge, Not the Gore

While video games are often slammed over violent content, a new study suggests that it is the challenge presented by a game rather than graphic violence which attracts players. The research, which appears today in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, was conducted at the University of Rochester in cooperation with Immersyve Inc., described as a "player-experience research firm."

NPD has released more sales results from the record-breaking month of December 2008. We've already seen the hardware figures and top 10 software sales, in which Nintendo's Wii games dominated with Wii Play (above) as the top-selling game of the month and year. Now, NPD gives us a broader picture: the top 20 games across all platforms, and the top 10 for each console. For list, see comment.

US spent record $5 billion on games in December

US consumers spent USD 5 billion on games, hardware and associated peripherals in December, according to the latest data from NPD. The month recorded the highest revenues of any other month in videogame history, up 9 per cent year-on-year. Sales for 2008 overall were up 19 per cent, to USD 21.33 billion.

Circuit City to shut down

Bankrupt electronics retailer Circuit City Inc. said Friday it has asked for court approval to close its remaining 567 U.S. stores and sell all its merchandise.

Ahead of Gamasutra's full NPD analysis on Monday, an exclusive graph shows the story behind its record revenues -- that year on year growth rates are dramatically slowing as we move into 2009. As can be seen, the industry entered a period of rapid growth in late 2006 that peaked in 2007, and has subsequently cooled throughout 2008.

NPD: PC Retail Games decline 14pc in 2008

While the console video game market has been soaring (as demonstrated by the just released NPD 2008 totals), PC game sales aren't so hot – from a retail perspective, that is. The NPD Group has revealed to GameDaily BIZ that PC games totaled just $701 million in 2008, which is down 14 percent from 2007. It's important to keep in mind, however, that this NPD data concerns retail data only.

Top 10 NPD US for 2008

According to the latest NPD figures, Nintendo has the top four best selling titles of 2008, with Wii Play heading the charts with 5.28 million copies sold for the year. Just behind is Mario Kart Wii with 5 millions units, then Wii Fit with 4.53 million and finally SSBB with 4.17 million copies sold through 2008. The 360 has four titles in the top ten whilst only GTA IV represents PlayStation 3 in total software sales for the console, for the year.
