Dragon Quest IX is the next installment in the revered Dragon Quest serious of role-playing games and it is the first of the numbered games in the franchise to appear on a handheld. The game is designed and exclusive for the Nintendo DS. The game will feature an action-oriented battle system (as has become popular with the company�s Final Fantasy games) rather than turn-based combat. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said: "I would like to form a strong tag team to promote Dragon Quest overseas. I want to increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest, which represents all Japanese gaming culture...even if that only turns out to be a single person." Will the Nintendo stamp on Dragon Quest make it the next Pokémon or Brain Training? Will a $20 million marketing machine for an extremely Japanese RPG ensure U.S. success?

Dragon Quest IX nearly finished

In an Interview with Bloomberg Japan, Yoichi Wada revealed that DQ 9 is nearly finished. He stated that many people want this game ASAP but they are still tweaking the Online mode and the Single player for its "Balance". He also stated that DQ 9 is a big title release for them so they don't want to rush it. He did not mention a release date window.

"Square Enix may be unwilling to commit to a final release date for Dragon Quest IX, but developer Level-5's president may have just done the deed himself. Appearing in an interview in the latest issue of Famitsu, Akihiro Hino said that his goal for 2008 is to finish work on White Knight Chronicles, Inazuma Eleven, the third Professor Layton game, and Dragon Quest IX."
