In the year 2161, after an enormous earthquake, the United States is divided into two countries by the Mississippi River. The Eastern States formed the Atlantic Alliance, while the Western States become the Republic of Pacifica. A futuristic war breaks out between the two nations, with the Atlantic Alliance pitting cybernetically enhanced humans against genetically engineered super soldiers used by Pacifica. Each side has specific tactics and abilities.
You play as Mason Briggs, a demolitions expert for the Atlantic Alliance. The only publically available detail about gameplay is known "Terrain Deformation." Grenades and rockets will raise or lower the landscape, allowiing you to access new areas or defeat enemies.
The game is being developed by Day 1 studios, which brought MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf to the Xbox and F.E.A.R. to the Xbox 360. There is no word yet on whether Fracture will play as a FPS or otherwise. It has been given a Summer 2008 release window for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Terrain deforming was a crucial aspect of the play in Red Faction back in 2001. Destroying terrain is certainly not something that was previously limited by computing power, but rather gameplay ideas. In an game, there have to be boundaries (the level can only be so big) and allowing the player to destroy whatever they want likely causes headaches in level design and balancing.
It could be a cool feature (Fracture actually allows the creation of terrain) but it might be quite gimmicky and distract from the fighting with weapons.

After watching the trailer, I am very excited to hear more about this game. The deformation of the terrain shown in the trailer seems truly a next-gen improvement on gameplay, something that could not have been done in the past generation. I hope that the terrain deformation is not somehow limited by only certain areas you can do certain things, if Day 1 allows the player to deform the terrain where ever they want, then this game could be huge.
Looking at the IPO, I think it is pretty accurate for both versions, though I would price the Xbox360 version at more around 120DKP. This game seems like another Mercenaries, as the publisher for both games is Lucasarts and they are both are original third-person shooters. From this I see this game having much the same success as Mercenaries did.
(on a side note, does anyone have sales data for Mercenaries?)

Hopefully this game will have solid gameplay other than the terrain deformation to back it up, as Maelstrom, other than those gimmicks, was not a great game. Also hopefully the storyline will be better than it so far sounds, at the moment it sounds fairly standard, but I guess I can't really complain. I wish though the story in games would get better, as I want the saying, "If you want a good story, go read a book" to go away.
