New name: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

"Sonic RPG is a currently untitled Nintendo DS RPG based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It is being developed by famed Canadian RPG developer BioWare. It is scheduled for a 2008 release in North America and Europe. No Japanese release date has yet been specified.

Similarly, a platform game franchise was sucessfully converted to an RPG in 1996 with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, based on the Mario franchise, and developed by famed Japanese RPG developer Squaresoft."

"Without giving away too much, we can say that we will be using many of DS's feature sets and we'll really be pushing the limits of what the system can do."

Kotaku has discovered a posting on the NeoGAF forums that shows the cover of the upcoming Nintendo Power. The cover says that it has an exclusive 7 page unveiling of the Sonic RPG now named Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for the Nintendo DS. Sonic Chronicles is undeniably a nice-looking game, and its slick presentation makes for an enticing experience to begin with. The longer you play, however, the more the cracks start to show, and what seemed like a potential minor classic is soon reduced to just "pretty good". Sonic fans will get the most from its short-lived charms, but with so many superior RPGs on the DS, the blue hedgehog needed to provide a lot more substance to make his genre debut an essential offering.

IGN: The storyline is made up of two acts. Please explain how this works? Mark Darrah The first Act takes place mostly in Sonic's World. Sonic and his friends are figuring out what is happening and trying to stop the Master Emerald from being taken. In the Second act, the group must travel to another dimension to stop a new threat to Sonic's World. IGN: How is the second act of the game darker? Can you give us some details?

BioWare's Sonic RPG: Coming September?

BioWare's upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog RPG may be out in September if US retailers are to be believed. Listings on the websites of US gaming retail giants (and sister companies) EB Games and GameStop websites show release dates of September 2nd for the mysterious RPG. At the moment SPOnG would definitely recommend filing this one under 'rumour', however. We contacted SEGA for confirmation but were unsurprised to be met with, "I can't comment on that", by a representative.
