Tiger Woods 08 is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and DS. At a media event in Florida, EA revealed that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will support a pair of new features that expand avatar customization and foster an online community.

Using a Sony EyeToy or Xbox Live Vision camera, gamers will now be able to map their faces on their digital golfers with Photo Game Face, which is similar to the system used in Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Vegas. Alternatively, photos from a digital camera can also be uploaded and used in the same fashion.

Golfers looking to do some bragging can share their greatest highlights with others with the new GamerNet feature. Single shots, holes, or even a full round of golf can be uploaded to servers for others to view. In addition, EA is taking the idea one step further and allowing users to create their own challenges and upload them for others to take on. Points are earned for both creating and completing challenges, and leaderboards will keep track of the top performers in both categories.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 is scheduled to be released in late summer.

If you played Tiger last year, or the year before, or even the year before, you've already played Tiger 08. But thats not necessarily a bad thing.

This year's Tiger is obviously trying to do something that no other game in the series has. Its community features look stupendous, with EA aiming to give players the ability to become online celebrities through the use of GamerNet's challenge system, and Photo GameFace. They skillfully dodged our questions about changes to the core gameplay - though we expect the right and left bumper to be used in totally different ways than before - but the info that we were given was tantalizing enough as it was.

This is the future of videogame golf. After uploading your own picture and scanning your ugly mug onto a virtual golfer (and adding the mandatory pink mohawk), you head to St. Andrews. On 18, you unleash the big dog and smash a low, burning drive. Your ball ricochets off the famous stone bridge, skyrocketing into the air before landing on a spectator's head, knocking him to the ground. Before you can wipe the grin off your face you save a replay and upload it to EA's new GamerNet to share the clip with your friends. Then you throw down the challenge. Your friend downloads the clip, thinks he can do better, and jumps right onto the 18th and hits his own drive off the bridge and a fan's dome and earns 100 GamerNet points. Back at EA Tiburon, a designer sees this hilarious shot and makes it the Shot of the Day. Other gamers check out the shot and try it for themselves. Soon the off-the-bridge-and-fan shot is the most downloaded shot of the week and jumps up the GamerNet leaderboards. Soon, thousands of Tiger 08 gamers around the world are bouncing balls off the bridge, earning points and moving themselves up the GamerNet leaderboards.

This year's Tiger Woods is going to change videogame golf forever." I remember thinking those very thoughts when I first saw Tiger Woods 08 at EA Sports' Tiburon Studio. Maybe it wouldn't change the way the actual act of golf is played - the controller is still in your hand after all - but the boatload of GamerNet features and the ridiculously cool facial mapping technology meant that the extracurricular activities were going to be a serious focal point for this year's game. But would the gameplay be able to make the same leaps and bounds?
